NYMAP Youth Video Exchange Network

Transferring Files

Thusfar, we have been experimenting with three different ways of transferring files between partners. Again, we would like to stress that NYMAP does not have the resources at this time to develop technology for transferring files. Rather we plan to build upp the infrastructure necessary to facilitate a network of people using methods of distribution which are already available. We have listed some of these methods and technologies and offer some simple tutorials to get you started.

www.pando.com Pando is a free application that allows people to send large files to one another using a central server as an intermediary storage location.

once you have downloaded the Pando application on to your computer, and have it open....

  • Step 1. click 'send new'
  • Step 2. enter the email addresses of all the NYMAP partners you would like to share with.
  • Step 3. drag the video file (mp4) into the 'files & folders' box. you can also type a subject (ex. new GRTV videos!) which will appear on the email to the group. you can also drag more than one file in to create a package if you have them. just be sure to make a 'video entry for each. then click send!
  • Email received - At the same time, an email containing a small (~10K) .pando file is sent to the recipient(s). The .pando file contains data about the location of the files sent.
  • Files delivered - Recipient(s) click the .pando file to start a p2p swarm delivery from the sender's machine, Pando's supernodes and other recipients. All transfers are encrypted end-to-end.
  • Example of use: Jane in Portland would like to send Adam in NYC and Maxine in St. Paul a 300 MB file (28 minute episode). Jane is not immediately concerned with making sure that everyone in the network gets the file at the same time, so she opens Pando and sends the file to Adam and Maxine.
